July 06 -- The Boston Fire Department is mourning the loss of Firefighter Justin D. Poitras, who died in an off-duty motorcycle crash.

Poitras, 31, was involved in a motorcycle crash on July 3 and died of his injuries the next day.

The motorcycle collided with a car near the intersection of Clapp and Boston streets in Dorchester, according to The Boston Globe.

Poitras was appointed to the Boston Fire Department on Oct. 31, 2016, and assigned to Engine Company 42, the department said in a statement.

Prior to becoming a firefighter, Poitras served four years in the United States Marine Corps. He participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom and received an honorable discharge.

Poitras was the son of Miriam and Mark Poitras, the department said. He was the brother of Lowell Firefighter Joshua Poitras.

"Our thoughts and prayers remain with him family, friends and the members of the Boston Fire Department as we mourn his loss," the statement read.
