Donation Scam Follows TX Firefighter's Death

July 27, 2018
Authorities say scammers are making calls seeking donations for the family of a Laredo firefighter who died in a motorcycle crash on July 15.

July 27 -- Scammers are trying to cash in on the recent death of a Laredo firefighter, authorities said Wednesday evening.

Rolando "Roli" Solis died July 15 in a motorcycle crash on South Interstate 35.

"We have recently discovered that there are calls being made around town asking for monetary donations for the Solis family on behalf of the firefighters," Laredo police said.

LPD added, "The lengths some criminals go to in order to trick people and scam them are incredible, but this scam hits especially close to home."

Police said firefighters are not making solicitation calls to collect money for relatives of Solis.

"Please use extreme caution when anyone calls soliciting donations, especially on behalf of the fire department," LPD said. "We know that people want to show their appreciation for their first responders, but do not be taken by these criminals taking advantage of this terrible tragedy to steal from good-hearted people."
