A Mississippi fire division chief was hit by a stray bullet while he was at home in bed early Monday.
Capt. Craig Odems of the Jackson Fire Department told authorities that he was laying in his bed about midnight when he heard gunfire coming from outside his house, WAPT-TV reports. He was then hit in the side by a bullet that was shot into the house.
Odems had surgery for the gunshot wound at University of Mississippi Medical Center and is in intensive care.
"They got the bullet out. The bullet did not hit any major arteries," Chief Willie Owens told the TV station. "He's good with that, and he's going to be OK."
"Thank God it wasn't any worse than what it was, because it could have been even worse," he added. "But you're lying in your bed asleep and then all of a sudden you get a stray bullet come through and hit you, that's saying a lot about the crime situation."
An unknown individual was seen walking near Odems' home before the fire captain was shot, and police are investigating the shooting.
