A Houston firefighter who collapsed outside of his station Saturday evening died of an apparent heart attack, according to the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
A stern and formal procession carried the body of fallen Houston firefighter Kenneth Stavinoha to the funeral home Monday after leaving the forensic sciences building in the Texas Medical Center, where an autopsy determined his cause of death. Stavinoha was 36 when he collapsed just outside Houston Fire Department Station 27 on the northeast side of the city around 6 p.m. Saturday.
He is survived by his wife, Jessica.
"He was performing his assigned station duties when he experienced a medical emergency and did not survive," Fire Chief Sam Peña said. "Please keep him and his family in your prayers."
A procession of HFD fire engines, ambulances and support trucks – including those from Station 27 – left the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences around 2 p.m. Monday, destined for Klein Memorial Park funeral home in Tomball, where the late firefighter will be laid to rest.
Funeral arrangements have yet to be publicly announced.
