A Mississippi firefighter was shot and killed in a gas station parking lot late Sunday in what police are calling a possible robbery.

Jackson Fire Lt. Yancy Williams was fatally wounded just before midnight outside a Marathon gas station, police said in an online statement. His vehicle was taken from the parking lot, and investigators believe robbery was the motive.

In an online post, Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba wrote that police had arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting. The mayor also offered his condolences to Williams' family.

"Our heartfelt sympathies and prayers go out to the family of Lt. Williams, whose life was cut down by a senseless act of violence," he wrote.

Williams had been with the Jackson Fire Department since 2013, according to Lumumba. He recently had been promoted to lieutenant.
