The COVID-19 pandemic has hit a New Jersey nursing home for firefighters, leading to at least one death, according to officials.

At least 22 residents and 15 staffers at New Jersey Firemen's Home in Boonton have tested positive for the deadly virus, the Morris County Daily Record reports. The facility has 95 beds, with 75 of those set aside for long-term care residents.

"Fire departments throughout the state have contacted us and have been very helpful and very generous," Hugh Flood, the facility's superintendent, told the Record. "I salute all the men and women from the auxiliaries, with the masks they've sewn, who have all shown up with something to help us get through this troubled time. I'm very proud they all came up to bat."

Residents and staffers with COVID-19 have been isolated or quarantined, and their conditions are being monitored. Although government officials don't know how many fatalities the virus has caused at the home, Flood told the Record that one person had died but wouldn't give details.

Because the coronavirus has been sweeping through staffers, there has been concern that a lack of care workers at the facility would force residents to be moved to another location. In fact, Morris County health officials have been contacting health care workers in order to fill staffing need at facilities like the home.

“We love our firemen, and we don’t want them to leave our facility, but at the same time, we need to make sure that they are provided with the same level of exceptional care that they are accustomed to here at the New Jersey Firemen’s Home," Donna Russo, director of nursing for the New Jersey Firemen's Home, told the Record. "We welcome health care providers, RN’s, LPN’s, to join our team."

The New Jersey Firemen's Home was founded in 1898, and it's the only nursing home and residential-care facility focused on serving the state’s 77,000 active and retired firefighters, according to the facility. Since opening, the home has helped more than 1,785 people.

Along with the care facility, the home also has a museum of fire-fighting memorabilia on its 85-acre property. An addition that would include units for dementia and memory care is currently under construction, according to the Record.
