BRANFORD, CT—The town is mourning the death Thursday of Selectman Joseph Higgins Jr., a former Fire Department of New York official during 9/11 who later retired to Branford and had served on the Board of Selectmen for the past 61/2 years.

“It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of Selectman Joseph Higgins Jr.,” First Selectman Jamie Cosgrove said in a press release, which also was posted on the town’s Facebook page. Higgins “was an incredible man that dedicated his entire life to public service,” the release said.

“Prior to his service in Branford, Joe served for more than 40 years as an FDNY dispatcher, becoming the deputy director of dispatch operations. He also served as a FDNY Fire Commissioner’s liaison before retiring to Branford in 2006,” Cosgrove said.

Higgins “was serving on the ground with the leadership team during 9/11 and the loss of so many close friends weighed heavily on his heart,” he said. “Joe was the keynote speaker at our annual 9/11 remembrance ceremonies. He focused his message towards the children believing the best way to honor the lost was to teach our young people about the immense sacrifice made to save others.

“The departments and communities he served over many years benefited from his experience and his wisdom, and we are honored to have had him serve as selectman in our town for the past 6 1/2 years,” Cosgrove said. “Our deepest condolences go to out to his wife Angie, daughter Michele, her husband Michael, and grandsons, Nicholas and Joseph.”

The Branford Fire Department also mourned Higgins’ passing in a post on its Facebook page.

“We regret to announce the passing of Selectman Joe Higgins,” the post read. “Joe was a true gentleman, friend and avid supporter of the fire service. “... We will miss you around the firehouse table, Joe. Your smile was infectious and your company always welcome,” said the Fire Department post, which also offered condolences to Higgins’ family.
