Police: Woman Struck FL Firefighter with Soup Can-Filled Sock

Aug. 28, 2020
A 64-year-old woman is accused of using a sock filled with two soup cans to strike a Marion County firefighter at a fire investigation scene after she claims the first responder "brushed her off."

A Florida woman allegedly pummeled a firefighter with a sock filled with two soup cans over after she says she was slighted by the first responder at an investigation scene.

Claudia Jean Cyr, 64, of Belleview, has been charged with battery of a firefighter and was being held on $500 bond, Ocala-News.com reports. Her next court appearance will be Sept. 29.

The incident happened at about 6 p.m. Monday. According to the Marion County Sheriff's Office's report, Cyr approached Marion County firefighters conducting a fire investigation because she said she had information relevant to the case.

The firefighter told Cyr to leave the scene until they could speak with her later. When Cyr returned, she said she hadn't witnessed anything and began calling the firefighter vulgarities.

Cyr was told to leave the area again, and she complied but returned with a soup can-filled sock, according to Ocala-News.com. She then struck the firefighter twice around the shoulder and on the name.

When Cyr tried to deliver a blow to the firefighter's head, another investigator stepped in and stopped her. Cyr told deputies that she had approached the firefighters because she had relatives in the fire service but that she was brushed off.

Cyr also claims she only swung once at the firefighter because she felt threatened. She told deputies that she swung downward with the sock because she had been trained to do so.

Deputies recovered the sock in the back of a Marion County fire apparatus, and Cyr was taken into custody.
