Coroner: PA Firefighter Died of COVID Pulmonary Embolisms

Scranton firefighter Stephen Sunday, who died Dec. 29, tested positive for the virus and was in quarantine when he became critically ill, according to the Lackawanna County coroner.

The unexpected death of a 28-year-old Scranton firefighter was caused by multiple pulmonary embolisms from COVID-19, Lackawanna County Coroner Tim Rowland announced today.

Stephen Sunday, who died Tuesday, previously tested positive for COVID-19 and was in quarantine at home when he became critically ill and was taken to a hospital, Rowland said.

A pulmonary embolism is a blockage in one of the pulmonary arteries in the lungs.

A firefighter since January, Sunday died at Geisinger Community Medical Center.
