Delaware firefighters and other first responders are seeing a delay in receiving a second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
State health officials are pushing pause on the follow-up vaccine doses because of a low supply, WPVI-TV reports. Under new guidelines from the Centers of Disease Control, vaccine recipients can receive the second dose up to six weeks after the first.Â
"You can actually wait up to 42 days without there being a problem getting the second dose. So don't get too excited or too worried if you are not able to get the dose exactly on time,"Â Dr. Margaret Savoy from Temple's Lewis Katz School of Medicine told WPVI.
The state's Fire Prevention Commission estimates that the dose schedule change is expected to affect around 3,500 people. Some first responders find the change a bit unsettling in the middle of a pandemic.
"To be told a few days before you're supposed to get your second dose, it's a little disconcerting," Talleyville firefighter Robert Pappa told WPVI.
"It could be a week late, it could be a few days late, as of right now it's up in the air. We have no idea when we would be able to get our second dose," he added.
