An Aurora firefighter was struck after the driver of a car they were called to check on woke up and tried to drive away.

Jul. 4—Two Aurora firefighters were injured Saturday while on a medical call, officials said.

Aurora Fire Rescue and Aurora police said they were responding to a call at 4:30 p.m. Saturday of an unresponsive driver on the 17000 block of East Quincy Avenue. The driver, who was inside a vehicle, awoke when responders contacted him.

The man, police said, put his vehicle into gear, striking a firefighter. A second firefighter was injured when he attempted to stop the driver by breaking out a window and reaching into the vehicle.

According to Aurora Fire Rescue, a second unit was sent to the scene to treat the two firefighters and the driver. The firefighters were transported to a local hospital and treated for injuries that were not life threatening. The driver was also taken to a hospital for minor injuries, police and fire rescue said.
