A group of California firefighters secured themselves inside their station when two men threatened violence after a firefighter witnessed them stashing two illegal firearms.
According to KTVU News, a firefighter was driving his personal vehicle to his station in the Oakland hills last Thursday when he saw two men dumping something which turned out to be a backpack with two loaded Glocks inside.
The two men saw the firefighter observing them, hopped in a car and began tailing his vehicle. They pulled alongside him but then drove off when the firefighter slammed on his brakes. The firefighter then went back to the site where the men were loitering and discovered two 9mm handguns with extended magazines.
The firefighter took the guns to the station, and the two men who had stashed them later arrived and began threatening him and other crew members. The suspects took photos of the license plates on the firefighters' personal vehicles and said they would kill them and their families.
"It's unfortunate when violence or threats come home to us in the firehouse," said IAFF Local 55 President Zac Unger.
Oakland Fire Chief Reginald Freeman told KTVU that the firefighters took precautions and secured themselves inside the building before calling police.
"The firefighters, they protected themselves, went inside the firehouse, made sure the firehouse was secure, called law enforcement," Freeman said.
Oakland police rushed to the scene, but the men had already left. No arrests have been made, but an investigation is ongoing.
"Nothing or no one's going to scare them from executing their sworn duties as firefighters for our great city," Chief Freeman said.
