Authorities are investigating the death of a Newark fire captain who was discovered unresponsive at a city firehouse Saturday morning.
A second person, a retired firefighter, was also found unconscious at the Park Avenue firehouse, and remained hospitalized, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said Saturday in a news release.
Both were taken to University Hospital, where the captain was pronounced dead.
The preliminary investigation showed no signs of violence, and the cause and manner of death will be determined by an autopsy, the prosecutor’s office said.
The office released few other details, but said the investigation is being conducted by the office’s Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force.
Katherine Carter, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office, declined further comment when reached by phone Saturday night.
