A Syracuse firefighter suffered minor burns while battling a vacant house fire Sunday night on the city’s Near West Side, Fire Chief Michael Monds said.
The firefighter, whose name was not released, was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse for treatment, the chief said.
Firefighters were called to a fire at a vacant home, at 420 Merriman Ave., at 10:26 p.m.
A 911 caller told dispatchers fire was coming out the back of the 2 1/2-story, wood-frame house. When firefighters arrived two minutes later, they saw flames in the second floor, extending to the attic, Monds said in a news release.
The house was boarded up and there was no electric service to the home, the chief said. Firefighters carried hose lines up the back stairway to the second floor and attic. They extinguished the fire in about a half-hour, Monds said.
Firefighters searched the house for anyone who might be trapped inside, but they did not find anyone, the chief said.
The injured firefighter, who was on Engine Company 3, has been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, Monds said.
