Two San Diego firefighters responding to reports of smoke near a commercial building on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard suffered minor blast injuries from a small explosion, according to fire authorities.

"Right now, we don't know exactly what caused the explosion," said San Diego Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Jeff Mitchell. He said the two firefighters suffered minor cuts and other injuries to their faces when a window on the second floor of the building blew out from the blast.

Firefighters responded at about 6:30 p.m. Monday to reports of smoke near a building on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard Ruffner Street and Convoy Street.

When they arrived, they saw black smoke coming from the back of a building, and when they searched the second floor, there was some type of blast, Mitchell said.

Firefighters extinguished a small fire on the second floor. The two injured firefighters were transported to a hospital.

Fire investigators were responding to both the hospital and the building to try and find out what exploded, Mitchell said.
