A firefighter candidate died Friday while taking the physical agility test at the Flagler County Fire Rescue academy in Bunnell.
Fendrick Gabaud, 40, had successfully completed the agility test under the time limit and reported shortness of breath as he took of his gear. He also told academy staff he wasn't feeling well.
Crews began evaluating Gabaud when he went unresponsive, according to WESH.com.
Fire and EMS crews treated Gabaud and transported him to AdventHealth Palm Coast. He was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Gabaud, of Ormond Beach, recently graduated from the fire academy and was hoping to join Flagler Beach Fire Rescue.
Fire Chief Michael Tucker said the agiiity exam included moving hose lines, dragging a manikin, a stair climb and carrying equipment.
Gabaud, who had recently graduated from fire school, was seeking employment with FCFR.
“Our hearts go out to the family of this young man whose life was tragically cut short, as well as to the men and women of Flagler County Fire Rescue who stood beside him during his final moments," said Bunnell Police Chief David Brannon. "This is a heartbreaking reminder of the risks faced by those who pursue a career in public safety. On behalf of the Bunnell Police Department, I extend our deepest sympathy to his loved ones and to our colleagues in the fire service.”
An investigation into Gabaud's death is underway by the medical examiner’s office, state fire marshal's officer and Bunnell Police Department.
