Georgetown, DE, Fire Police Officer Directing Traffic, Hit by Car

The 78-year-old fire police officer was flown to a trauma center after being struck on Lewes-Georgetown Highway.

A fire police officer with the Georgetown Fire Company was critically injured Monday when he was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic.

The incident happened just after 8:30 p.m. while he was providing traffic control for a highway crash scene, the agency stated in a news release. 

The 78-year-old fire police officer was standing near his vehicle, which had its emergency lights on. The officer also was wearing a high visibility reflective vest, as well as using a red strobe wand, WMDT reported.

Medical treatment was administered at the scene, and the officer was airlifted to a hospital. His injuries were considered critical.

The Delaware State Police are investigating the incident.
