Mabank, TX, Fire Chief Struck and Killed Directing Traffic at Rodeo

Mabank Fire Chief Charlie Woodard was struck by a passing pickup truck while directing traffic at the Mabank Rodeo

The Mabank fire chief was struck while directing traffic Saturday night and later died at the hospital.

Charlie Woodard was directing traffic at the Mabank Rodeo Grounds when he stepped into the westbound lane of U.S. Highway 175 and was struck by a passing pickup truck, the Texas Department of Public Safety told NBCDFW.com. Mabank is located about 60 miles southeast of Dallas.

Woodard was transported to UT Health in Gun Barrel City, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to the Mabank Police Department.

The driver of the pickup truck was not injured, police said.

The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. during the 71st annual Mabank Rodeo week.

The Texas Municipal Police Association said Woodard also served as a police officer. It is unclear in what capacity he was working at the time of the incident.

“TMPA joins the Mabank community, his family, loved ones, fellow officers, firefighters, and all who served beside him in mourning this heartbreaking loss. Please keep his family and the entire Mabank public safety family in your prayers during this incredibly difficult time,” the association said in a statement.

“When tragedy strikes, it affects us all. In these difficult moments, our communities always come together to surround one another with love, support, and prayer,” Malakoff Mayor Nicole Mason-Driver wrote on Facebook. “Let us honor Chief Woodard’s life by remembering his selfless service and the sacrifices made every day by our first responders.”

The Department of Public Safety is working with local law enforcement agencies to investigate the incident.
