Dräger PSS AirBoss SCBA Available in the United States
Dräger announced the availability of the Dräger PSS AirBoss Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) for purchase in the United States via its network of Authorized Sales Partners.
Following the AirBoss certification to NFPA 1970 (2025 Edition) standards, announced in November 2025, this milestone marks it as one of the first new SCBAs to comply with the latest safety requirements of the fire service. Fire departments in the U.S. can now place orders for the AirBoss SCBA, assured that they are getting a breathing apparatus specifically designed for American firefighters.
With improved ergonomics, simplified controls, and highly visible indicators tailored to the needs of today's American fireground, the Dräger AirBoss SCBA provides next-generation protection. The SCBA was developed with a “Made for America” philosophy, meaning that American firefighters played a direct role in shaping the design of the AirBoss from its initial concept to final testing. To guarantee that this SCBA mirrors the operational practices of U.S. crews, Dräger gathered input from fire departments nationwide.
Firefighters called for an improved SCBA that aligns with their movement, accommodates their attack style, and alleviates stress in extreme heat and intensity. Dräger’s engineers responded by designing the AirBoss to meet these practical firefighting requirements. Extensive field trials conducted in the U.S. confirmed the AirBoss's effectiveness, demonstrating its durability and performance in the extreme conditions encountered by American firefighters.
“AirBoss isn’t just built for firefighters — it’s built with them,” said John Wilson, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Dräger. “We worked side by side with America’s fire service throughout development, and now we’re proud to deliver on that collaboration."
“Now that AirBoss is available, firefighters can equip themselves with an SCBA born from their input and built for their toughest calls,” Wilson continued. “It’s a pack they can trust to move and fight as hard as they do, backed by Dräger’s commitment to their safety.”
The AirBoss was designed for aggressive interior attacks and extended missions, featuring performance-oriented elements such as:
- An ergonomic “floating” waist belt that maintains weight on the hips for improved movement and balance
- High-visibility markers and reflective surfaces that facilitate rapid accountability in smoky settings
- Muscle-memory flexibility with left or right regulator and gauge placement according to departmental preferences
- Non-indexing regulator insertion that enables quick sealing under pressure
- Quick, tool-less disassembly that makes cleaning possible in minutes rather than hours
The 2025 Edition of NFPA 1970 consolidates various PPE standards into one more rigorous benchmark for SCBA performance and firefighter safety. With AirBoss's NFPA certification, U.S. fire departments can confidently align their purchasing decisions with the latest requirements.
“With AirBoss, U.S. firefighters don’t have to change how they operate,” said Jason Morton, Dräger Product Manager for AirBoss. “Their SCBA finally operates the way they do.”
AirBoss delivers the support that U.S. departments anticipate, spanning from product support to service delivery, and is bolstered by an expanding network of regional service locations designed to enhance uptime and reduce turnaround.
