Jacob Kirkendall of Santa Cruz shot a U.S. Forest Service division fire chief who was driving a marked vehicle on Nacimiento-Fergusson Road after battling a wildfire in Big Sur on Monday.

Even though he was wounded in the neck and ear, Chief Peter Harris was able to provide a description to a 911 operator.

Kirkendall was apprehended after leading Monterey County Sheriff's deputies and Fort Hunter Liggett officers on a chase through the Army post while he was driving a red pickup truck. Shots were fired during the pursuit.
