Alachua County Fire Rescue and Emergency Medical Services has received three separate federal grants for body armor vests thanks to a coalition trying to reduce dangers for healthcare workers.
“The component in an active shooter (situation) that was failing was the emergency medical services fire rescue," Lt. David Torsell told WCJB-TV. "The reason they were failing is because they weren't being allowed access to the patients early enough in the incident where life-threatening injuries could be treated and the patients could have better outcomes."
