Ex-NY Fire Chief Who Helped at Ground Zero Dies

A 29-year veteran firefighter, former Getzville Fire Chief Irving Isenberg was diagnosed with multiple myeloma—a cancer common for 9/11 responders—three years ago.

A longtime New York firefighter who was part of the statewide mutual aid deployment to Ground Zero after the Sept. 11 attacks has died.

Former Getzville Fire Chief Irving Isenberg, 55, had been diagnosed with multiple myelomaa cancer common among 9/11 respondersthree years ago, WGRZ-TV reports. He and three other firefighters from the Getzville Fire Company had helped with rescue efforts at Ground Zero and were stationed only a block from the attack site.

Isenberg had been a Getzville firefighter for 29 years. He is survived by his wife, two stepchildren, a granddaughter two sisters and his mother.

The Getzville Fire Company has asked residents to use a red light bulb in the porch lights and keep them turned on throughout November in honor of Isenberg and all fallen firefighters, WGRZ added.
