Retired OH Firefighter Wounded in Interstate Shooting

July 8, 2020
A former Columbus firefighter says his firefighter license plates made him the target for an interstate shooter who opened fire after yelling anti-firefighter and anti-police remarks.

A retired Ohio firefighter claims a highway shooter targeted him over the weekend because of his firefighter license plates.

The shooting involving the former Columbus firefighter happened Sunday along Interstate 270, WCMH-TV reports. The firefighter had just entered the interstate from Broad Street.

According to police, another driver pulled up beside the firefighter and began yelling anti-firefighter and anti-police remarks at him. The other driver then opened fire, wounding the firefighter.

Although the firefighter believes he was singled out because of his profession, a witness told police that the incident appeared to stem from road rage related to merging onto the interstate, according to WCMH.

The Ohio Fire Chiefs' Association issued an alert to members to exercise caution following the shooting.

Authorities are looking for a silver or gray SUV that fled on Interstate 70 after the shooting. Anyone with information should contact the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.
