Lincoln Park Capt. Doug Vance was responding to a previous accident when the apparatus he was in was struck by a tractor-trailer along Interstate 75 earlier this month.

A Michigan firefighter who was seriously injured when a tractor-trailer slammed into the apparatus he was in earlier this month was released from the hospital Friday.

Lincoln Park Capt. Doug Vance, 56, was met with cheers and applause from family, friends and first responders from around the area as he walked out of Beaumont Hospital, Taylor, WDIV-TV reports. He was able to go home in time for his first wedding anniversary Monday.

Vance suffered a skull fracture, broken bones in his ear and bleeding on the brain from a July 10 accident along Interstate 75. A tractor-trailer struck the apparatus he was in while he was responding to a previous crash.

Another firefighter also was injured in the incident. That firefighter was able to return to duty days later.
