A South Carolina firefighter was killed in a motorcycle accident on his way to work Monday, less than a week after another firefighter from the area died in a similar way.
The crash happened shortly after 7:30 a.m. as Canebrake firefighter Eugene Kappenman, 24, was heading to work, WSPA-TV reports. That's when his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck.
Kappenman, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, died at the scene. The pickup driver was uninjured.
"We are shaken and unprepared for such an unexpected loss," the Canebrake Fire Department said in an online statement.
The fatal crash is similar to one involving another area firefighter that occurred last week. Tyler Warfield, 23, was on his way to the Reidville Fire Department on Wednesday after finishing a shift at Clear Spring Fire and Rescue when his motorcycle struck a pickup truck.
“It’s unbelievable to me, Reidville Fire Chief Patrick Evatt, whose department responded to Kappenman's accident, told WSPA. "This is my 27th year in the fire service, I can’t remember when two first responders passed away this close."
