Jason Belin is doing what he loves -- being a firefighter with the Houston Fire Department.
But, he came close to being sidelined after a heart issue in June.
The engineer-operater was training with colleagues when his heart rate dropped drastically, KHOU reported.
“You don’t ever think that you’re going to get your own guys to come to your aid, but when you do, you need them," Belin told reporters.
The 46-year-old, with no history of heart issues, learned that his heartbeat had stopped in the lower chamber. That made him a great candidate for a leadless pacemaker, one of the newest on the market.
“This is the future of pacemakers," Dr. Khashayar Hematpour with UTHealth Houston and Memorial Hermann said. “There are no loose components.”
There's a lot of stress on wires on traditional pacemakers which can cause them to fail.
The tiny device is credited for getting his life -- and heart rate -- back on track.
He's back on the job with no restrictions.
