Person Dies by Suicide Outside Plano, TX, Fire Station During Media Event for New Shift Schedule
A person died by suicide Wednesday during a Plano Fire Department media event.
The city said in a statement on Facebook that the incident occurred in the public parking lot outside Fire Station One.
Plano Fire Rescue staff responded and performed life-saving measures. The unidentified person, who is not associated with the fire department, was taken to an area hospital, where they died from their injuries.
“Our hearts are with the individual’s family, as well as with the members of the media and city personnel who were present,” the city’s statement read. “We have offered our full support to those affected by today’s events.”
The media event was being held to discuss the department’s new 24/72 shift schedule, a first in Texas. This means fire rescue personnel will work 24 hours and then be off for 72.
According to a statement from the City of Plano on Tuesday, the schedule change was approved to address the increase in calls and its impact on the mental health of firefighters.
“By investing in this new 24/72 schedule and additional personnel, we are not only protecting the health of our firefighters but also ensuring the highest level of service for our community,” Plano Mayor John Muns said in the statement on Tuesday. “This decision reflects our dedication to keeping Plano a safe, thriving city with an outstanding quality of life for everyone who lives and works here.”
