Several FDNY firefighters were injured Wednesday night after a large explosion occurred as they responded to a car fire in the Bronx.
FDNY Engine 82 responded to a car fire just after 7 p.m. on Intervale Avenue near Kelly Street, according to the New York Post.
Video captured a large explosion as firefighters were working and showed bystanders running from the scene.
“The fire started in the trash and it spread under the car,” delivery driver Frank Rojas told the Daily News. “The car popped. There was at least two explosions. “The first popping was from the trash and the second … explosion was the car. The flames flew way up. It was a fireball.”
The explosion left a large debris field around the vehicle and the fire damaged Engine 82's fire apparatus, along with another vehicle.
Six firefighters were taken to Jacobi Medical Center for treatment, with officials telling WABC.com that injuries includes burns to the face and hands of several members.
FDNY's fire marshal unit was dispatched to the scene to investigate the incident, along with NYPD officials.
