Burned Montville, ME, Firefighter Leaves Hospital to Recover at Home

His release came less than 24 hours after Searsmont Assistant Fire Chief Wayne Woodbury died of injuries from the lumber yard blast.

The day after an assistant fire chief died of injuries sustained in a lumber mill explosion, another was released from the hospital.

On Sunday, Searsmont Assistant Wayne Woodbury, 76, died at Maine Medical Center. Less than 24 hours later, Montville Firefighter Jacob Spaulding walked out.

"I’m feeling good. It’s great to be home. Great to see everyone that came out,” Spaulding told WGME.

He lauded the efforts of burn center staff for his recovery.

"Everyone down there was wonderful. I mean, they put up with everything we could come up with. And they did everything they could to keep us healthy and happy. But no place like home.”

Morrill Firefighter Andrew Cross, 27, died at the scene of the May 15 explosion at Robbins Lumber.

Others injured remain hospitalized.
