PEPPER PIKE, Ohio — A North Randall firefighter was killed and a woman was injured after an intoxicated driver struck the two while the man was changing a tire early Saturday morning, police said.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office identified Cameron Duvall, 29, of North Randall as the man who was struck. Pepper Pike police Lt. Jim Colbert said the driver is Joseph Simmons, 26, of Geneva. He appeared Monday in Shaker Heights Municipal Court for a preliminary hearing and the court will forward his case to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office.

Duvall and the woman arrived around 2:45 a.m. at the 28000 block of Fairmount Boulevard to help a stranded driver change a tire, according to police Chief Karl Dietz. As Duvall and the woman worked near the trunk of the car, a person driving on the road hit them and the car.

The woman has serious injuries but was in stable condition as of late Saturday morning. Duval succumbed to his injuries, Dietz said.

The stranded motorist was transported to the hospital, but police weren’t sure of the person’s possible injuries or condition as of Monday, Colbert said.

The driver was arrested and charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault, operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and failure to maintain an assured clear distance ahead, Pepper Pike police said.

Duvall had worked with the North Randall Fire Department since 2022, according to a statement from Fire Chief Marshall Shorts and Mayor David Smith.

“His dedication, professionalism and willingness to serve others exemplified the very best of our department and our village,” the statement said. “Cameron’s loss is deeply felt by our fellow firefighters, police officers, village employees, elected officials and entire North Randall community.”
