College of the Sequoias, CA, Fire Cadet Dies During Training
A College of the Sequoias fire cadet sufferered a medical emergency and died earleri this week.
The unidentified cadet was treated by fellow students until the on-siite paramedic arrived, abc30 reported.
The cadet died at a nearby hospital the following day.
No cause of death has been determined.
"We are devastated by this loss and extend our heartfelt condolences to the cadet's family, friends and loved ones," college officials wrote in a statement.
Fire academy applicants must pass a health and physical agility exam before being accepted into the program.
Dr. Howard Cohen told reporters that the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of staying healthy and hydrated, particularly during warmer months.
"Also, during the heat and summer, I would highly recommend avoiding caffeine, such as Coca-Cola and coffee because that has caffeine and could also cause dehydration. Also during the heat and summer, your electrolytes and kidney function will," he said.
