Although the virus has sidelined some units, Augusta Fire/EMA officials dispute concerns from the firefighters union that staffing issues have led to temporary station closings.
 
"I, for one, would never make a decision as fire chief to take away our fire sirens," said the head of the Oakmont Volunteer Fire Department following recent complaints about the volume of the sirens.
 
A plan to make up for a $6.5 million budget deficit by shutting down three Kern County fire stations per day for a year has been taken off the table in favor of a safer payment proposal.
