CARROLLTON Carroll County commissioners recently agreed to terminate an occupancy arrangement with the Carroll County Volunteer Fire Department which is on the verge of merging with the village fire protection unit.
The occupancy arrangement, which pertains to a county-owned building at 1101 N. Lisbon St., will conclude in June. Meanwhile, the county Fire Department is preparing to move in with the Carrollton Fire Department at 135 Third St. SW.
The Carroll County Volunteer Fire Department, despite its name, was not under authority of the county commissioners. But the county commissioners did support the unit with grant payments and allowed it to use the building as its headquarters.
"There wasn't any rent paid on that building," Carroll County Commissioner Jeffrey Ohler said. "We never received any rental income."
The Carrollton Fire Department is under the village and it also provides fire protection through contracts for five neighboring townships in Carroll County.
"With the (Carroll County) Fire Department merging with Carrollton, the assets that belong to the Fire Department will go to Carrollton," Carroll County Commissioner Robert Wirkner said.
"It will be up to the commissioners to decide how the building and grounds will be used. There are different entities that would like to have that building. There will be no problem finding another tenant. There were groups that were allowed to meet there."
Wirkner mentioned the 911 Technical Advisory Committee of Carroll County as one group that used the county-owned building.
