Firefighters at the North Hingham Fire Station have dealt with a roof leak for three or four years and the Hingham Fire Department is finally getting close to the funds to fix it.
Fire Chief Steve Murphy said the fire department has tried to do minor repairs on the ongoing slow leak of the roof many times over the years, but with no success. When it rains water drips into firefighters' living quarters, which has buckets stationed to catch the water leaking in.
"It does affect work when its raining and they've got water leaking in," Murphy said. " It wouldn't be a big deal somewhere else, but it does affect the morale a little bit."
For a more permanent fix the fire department hopes to re-purpose a $13,000 grant to repair roof leaks, water damage and test for mold from those leaks. Selectmen approved the plan last week and the department needs one last approval from the Advisory Committee April 11 before the re-purpose is final.
Murphy said they estimate the repairs to be about $8,000 and testing to be $3,000.
Pending the approval he said they plan to call the roofing company the next day to start the repair process as soon as possible.
"I want to take care of that before we get any more damage," he said. "[Minor repairs] have been putting a band-aid on the issue."
