IA Community Helps Firefighters after Station Lost in Storm

Sept. 6, 2020
The August derecho caused high winds that collapsed the Atkins fire station that members built in 1992.

Firefighters in Atkins are still getting help from the community weeks after a derecho knocked over their fire station.

High winds from the storm collapsed the roof of the station that was built by it's own members in 1992.

"We are normally the people who help people in the time of need, and here we were, our station was collapsed, our trucks were inside," Fire Chief Dan Rammelsberg told CBS2Iowa.com. "We could tell just by looking around, the devastation was everywhere."

One they got the apparatus and equipment out of the collapsed firehouse, they moved into the public works building to begin operations.

"It was like loosing your house. Loosing your safe place that you can go to when everything else is crashing down," firefighter Zachary Schmitz told the television station.

Schmitz added, "Right now were seeing a lot of community support, a lot of people asking what they can do to help asking if there is anything we need as members of the fire department."

Rammelsberg said as they plan to build a new station, they want to ensure it's located in the proper area and that it's design for their needs.
