Cleveland Fire Station, Apparatus Struck by Gunfire

April 12, 2021
No firefighters were injured, but shots broke the window of an apparatus bay door at Station 26 and damaged the windshield of the department's Engine 26.

Gunfire struck a Cleveland firehouse over the weekend, damaging station door and a parked apparatus.

Cleveland Division of Fire Lt. Michael Norman told WKYC-TV that the incident happened late Saturday morning at Station 26 at East 79th Street and Kinsman Road. Firefighters had heard apparent gunshots outside station and went downstairs from the living quarters to investigate.

They found that gunfire had struck the firehouse and broke the window of an apparatus bay door. The department's Engine 26 also was struck, and its windshield was damaged.

No one was hurt in the incident, which is currently under investigation. Despite the damage to the windshield, Engine 26 will remain in service, WJW-TV reports.

The damaged to the apparatus, however, adds to the struggles affecting Cleveland Division of Fire's fleet. The firefighters union recently voiced concerns about the state of disrepair of some vehicles, which could creates safety issues for personnel.
