The roof of a Monroe County fire station collapsed as firefighters tried to contain a fire that eventually gutted the structure Saturday night.
A 9-1-1 caller reported smoke coming from Monroe County Fire Station 10 in Smarr around 11 p.m.
Firefighters had responded to a medical call earlier that night, however, no one was in the station at the time the fire was reported, according to a Facebook post by Monroe County Emergency Services.
When firefighters arrived, there was a significant volume of fire in the station.
Crews made entry to control the fire until a portion of the roof collapsed causing them to transition to a defensive operation, the department said.
The fire was brought under control at 2:30 a.m., according to CBS46.com.
One firefighter injured their knee and was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Fire officials said the fire destroyed a 2001 Freightliner pumper that was parked in the station.
The Georgia State Fire Marshal's office was called out to assist with the investigation of the fire's cause.
