Firefighters were called away from one incident to respond to a fire in their historic Poughkeepsie fire station Tuesday evening.
Firefighters left Poughkeepsie Station 3 to attend a National Night Out event when they were called to an automatic alarm at an apartment building.
Just after 7 p.m., according to the Mid Hudson News, a 9-1-1 caller reported smoke coming from the second story of the Hooker Avenue firehouse and crews responded from the previous call.
Arriving firefighters found fire in the living area of the two-story station.
With help from Arlington and Fairview firefighters, they worked to bring the fire under control in about 30 minutes.
The newspaper reported that the second floor living area — the dining room, living room and kitchen — sustained extensive damage.
Two firefighters and an officer assigned to Engine 3 staffed the 99-year-old firehouse. The station also housed the city's rescue rig.
City officials said they were looking for a place to house the crew and rigs until repairs are made.
