MI Firefighters Return to Station after Mold Evacuation

Jan. 28, 2020
High levels of mold discovered in Dearborn's Fire Station No. 5 last week meant that crews had to stay in their apparatus for a night while they awaited for emergency calls.

Michigan firefighters who were forced to stay in apparatus after mold was discovered in their station are now able to return to the firehouse.

High levels of mold were found in Dearborn's Fire Station No. 5 last week following a flooding earlier in the month. Firefighters initially relocated to other stations when the flooding caused issues.

But that wasn't the case after cleanup crews discovered the mold. Crews needed to stay in their vehicles, awaiting emergency calls Thursday, the first night the station was shut down because of mold. Firefighters were then moved into temporary quarters at the Melvindale Recreation Center.

Now, those firefighters are set to move back into Station No. 5 on Tuesday, WDIV-TV reports. Tests had found 236-point levels in parts of the station; levels should only be around 50, according to the mold remediation team, which cleaned out the firehouse.

“The environmental test results came back with good results," a city representative told WDIV about the cleanup.
