While the new firehouse in downtown York has all the modern decor, its history -- including the era of its horses -- remains.
The Laurel Rex fire station, which officials say is one of the longest continously running in the nation, just received a $2.5 million facelift.
The original stables where horses were once held, with their names inscribed in stained glass are featured on the first floor while the second is like a walk into the past, WGAL reported.
"The upstairs has the old chandelier, the tall ceilings, the gigantic doors. So luckily, we fortunately kept the tall ceilings and all of the historic features of the Italianate structure that they built years ago," York Lt. Jonathan Spencer said.
The improvements include a new HVAC system, a sprinkler system, new windows, and a fresh coat of paint.
"Inside the firehouse here is definitely much more comfortable than the daily on the day to day," Spencer said.
