Park Eyed Again as Site for New Fire Station in Melbourne, FL

Nine months after Melbourne officials nixed the plans for the park station, they're revisiting them.

Last summer, some Melbourne residents thought they'd won the battle to stop a new fire station from being built in a neighborhood park.

They were wrong. Nine months after the city decided to look elsewhere to build a fire station, they are revisiting it.

“If our community would rather us be somewhere else, then, that’s what the council has to decide,” Fire chief Shane Leetch told WKMG.

Officials also are looking at another site about a mile down the road from the park. But, it would have to buy the property.

The new station would replace the 60-year-old structure near the park.

“Here we are back to square one," said Denise Ketchum, a resident who enjoys looking at the park from her house.
