Packaging and Crating Technologies (PACT®) in Watertown, Conn. will present its extensive, patented, fire-suppressant product line at the Battery Show in Novi, Michigan from September 12-14, 2023. Mort notes that more than 15,000 attendees will learn about PACT® Thermo ShieldTM, a lightweight, paper material with a moisture vapor application that prevents thermal runaway, a phenomenon in which the lithium-ion cell enters an uncontrollable, self-heating state caused by extremely high temperatures, shaking or puncturing. If this occurs, the protective PACT® Thermo ShieldTM wrap immediately cools the internal environment of the package, while limiting oxygen around the payload.
Mort further elaborates that besides hand-held devices, like cell phones, Bluetooth headsets and headphones, computer accessories, digital cameras, e-readers, game controllers, laptops, tablets, smartwatches and smoke/fire/carbon monoxide detectors, the most recent and prevalent items containing lithium-ion batteries that have become fire hazards are electric bikes, scooters, hoverboards, unicycles and electric cars.
To address this escalating issue, PACT® offers the PACT® Thermo Shield TR SleeveTM for E-mobility batteries. Its specially-coated, fire-suppressant paper is wrapped around each battery cell to mitigate thermal runaway between them, thus serving as a heat and flame barrier.
Mort notes that PACT® Thermo Shield TM also provides an eco-friendly way to ship or transport products safely to a battery recycler. The company recently unveiled a smaller product, the TR Envelope, to safely transport and store recyclable smaller devices such as cell phones, pagers, smartwatches and A-D batteries.
Additionally, the company will debut its newest defense against deadly lithium-ion battery fires: the PACT Lion-X fire extinguisher, a pre-mixed, water-based solution that quenches lithium-ion fires upwards of 1,600 F degrees within 30 seconds, while eliminating the release of toxic gases into the environment. When sprayed from an automatic or manual nozzle, PACT Lion-X sticks to 3-D shapes, overhead and vertical surfaces, and easily penetrates into small crevices. Further, the solution is designed to be used without personal protective equipment (PPE) and its powder-like residue is safe to wash and flush into sewers.
