FDNY Adopts First Due Amidst NERIS Compliance
As the FDNY shifts from the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) to the National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS), the FDNY has chosen First Due to assist with fire incident documentation across the agency. The FDNY is now operational on First Due, submitting fire incidents to NERIS while managing the operational demands of the largest municipal fire department in the United States.
The transition from NFIRS to NERIS on a national level signifies a major transformation in the collection, structuring, and utilization of fire incident data. This shift introduces broadened standards aimed at enhancing the accuracy, consistency, and interoperability of data across the country. In the case of large and complex urban agencies such as the FDNY, the transition is critical with respect to time. The department, which serves over 8.5 million residents and responds to almost 1.9 million emergencies annually, needed a standardized and scalable solution for incident documentation that could be quickly implemented without interfering with daily response operations.
When First Due’s NERIS module was implemented, the FDNY made fire incident documentation the first capability to be aligned within the platform. This strategy tackled immediate compliance needs and laid the groundwork for future modernization initiatives throughout the agency.
In the future, First Due will keep collaborating with New York City and large, intricate agencies nationwide to provide a consolidated Fire and EMS platform aimed at tackling the toughest operational challenges in public safety. This includes electronic patient care reporting (ePCR), data and analytics, scheduling and personnel management, assets and inventory oversight, responder health and wellness, fire prevention, and other essential workflows.
"Thoughtful modernization starts with getting the fundamentals right,” First Due Founder and CEO Andreas Huber noted. “No organization, regardless of size or complexity, is too large to innovate. By prioritizing mission-critical compliance requirements first, the FDNY is demonstrating how large municipal agencies can modernize deliberately, opening the door to improved outcomes across operations for administrators, responders, city leadership and the communities they serve.”
