License Plate Readers Help Police Capture Driver Who Struck East Hampton, CT, Firefighter
EAST HAMPTON — A 32-year-old man wanted for striking an East Hampton firefighter in a hit-and-run crash last month has been arrested, police said.
Kendal Shelton was taken into custody Tuesday in connection with the Sept. 13 crash, according to a Facebook post shared by the East Hampton Police Department.
Police said Shelton was behind the wheel of a vehicle that was observed passing multiple cars in no-passing zones, speeding and creating a hazard for pedestrians and other motorists.
The department said Shelton later struck a firefighter and narrowly missed several others when he drove through a road that had been closed due to an unrelated crash that took place earlier.
Investigators were able to identify Shelton as the driver by using license plate recognition systems from outside agencies and through other means, police said.
Shelton was charged with engaging police in pursuit, reckless driving, interfering with an officer, assault on public safety with injury, evading responsibility with injury, failure to move over for emergency vehicles, failure to comply with fingerprinting and several motor vehicle violations.
Shelton was held on a $30,000 court-set bond before being arranged in state Superior Court in Middlesex.
