Firefighters encountered a number of obstacles at a structure fire in Coram over the weekend.
In addition to icy road conditions on Long Island, Coram Fire Chief Justin Donovan said while the fire alarm system worked to alert residents, it didn't automatically notify fire departments.
Donovan said they were alerted to the fire by 9-1-1 calls. The delay affected the outcome.
Had firefighters been there sooner, he said they would have likely contained the fire to the garage where a Corvette melted to the ground.
A local fire marshal said the structure was built before the automatic alarm alerting systems were required.
The cause is under investigation.
