Jan. 16--A garbage truck driver ran for his life Wednesday morning after the vehicle exploded in flames in south Macon.

Justin Hill said he had stopped to pick up trash in the cul-de-sac at 4685 Pinedale Drive when he put the truck in reverse and heard the explosion shortly before 11a.m.

Flames shot into the cab and he fled along with the workers at the back of the truck, who ran down the street.

Marilyn White was inside her home when she heard the truck arrive and looked outside in time to see it erupt in flames.

The fire spread to her front yard and landscaping.

"My daughter had just raked piles of pine straw and now we don't have to bag it up," White said as she watched firefighters working in front of her street.

Macon-Bibb fire investigators are trying to determine what caused the explosion.

No one was hurt.
