Some of you may have seen the Jerry Seinfeld Netflix series "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee" in which the longtime comic hosts a different comedian on each episode as they ride around in a vintage car, drink some coffee and talk about comedy.
Jesse Quinalty, who will be presenting several courses at Firehouse Expo in Nashville, has given the fire service a similarly lighthearted series called "Firefighters in Fire Trucks Getting Ice Cream," which plays out pretty much exactly as it sounds: Quinalty showcases a unique piece of apparatus before heading out to pick up a fire service veteran, get some ice cream and talk about issues both big and small in the world of firefighting.
Firehouse contributor and FDNY Battalion Chief John Salka, who will also present during conference sessions at Expo and be inducted into the Firehouse Hall of Fame, was a guest on one of the latest episodes of the series, which can be found at www.fireicecream.com and on YouTube.
Longtime readers of Firehouse are familiar with Chief Salka's "The Fire Scene" column, and those who have met or spoken with him in person know his ability to tell a great story, which earned him a two-part episode. Part 2 of the series is below:
Other industry veterans who have appeared on early episodes of the new series are recently retired Seattle Assistant Chief Phil Jose and Durham, NH, Fire Chief Dave Emanuel.
Chief Billy Goldfeder, author of the "Close Calls" series for Firehouse, will appear on a soon-to-be-released episode. Check out the preview here.
New episodes will be published on the first of every month, according to the site.
