A distracted driver struck a Beaver Dam-Littlefield Fire and Rescue apparatus that pulled into traffic while firefighters were responding to a single-vehicle accident in Utah.

An Arizona fire apparatus was damaged when it was struck by a distracted driver while at the scene of a previous accident last week.

The initial incident happened shortly before 11:30 a.m. Friday in St. George, UT, when a car crashed down an embankment more than 30 yards from the road, the St. George News reports. Beaver Dam-Littlefield firefighters used hydraulic tools to extricate the driver, who was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries.

While crews were still at the scene, another car collided with a fire apparatus as the rig pulled into traffic. According to authorities, the car's driver had been looking at the previous single-vehicle accident when the crash happened.

The apparatus sustained extensive damage to the front driver's side bumper and the frame. The car's passenger side also was severely damaged.

The driver and an infant were evaluated at the scene for injuries but were not taken to the hospital. No firefighters were injured in the incident.

The apparatus was nearly two years old, and Beaver Dam-Littlefied Fire and Rescue had purchased the emergency vehicle in 2019.
