A Hubert firefighter was seriously injured and at least one other was hurt after a suspected blown tire caused caused the pumper to crash Saturday.

Members of the Hubert Volunteer Fire Department — with the fire chief behind the wheel — were returning from a Christmas parade when a tire blow out made the truck uncontrollable, the department shared on their Facebook page. 

The rig was travelling about 40 mph when the incident occurred, causing the pumper to go off the road and strike a driveway pipe before coming to a stop. "Our chief fought hard to control the truck, and managed to keep the truck upright," the statement read.

The rig suffered extensive front-end damage, according to photo shared by the department.

One firefighter suffered major injuries and had surgery Saturday, with a second surgery expected Sunday.

"(W)e ask that you pray for his recovery. They rest of us and bruised and battered but we will recovery...We will be back, we will recover, and we will keep going. Brothers and sisters stand strong together"

Crews from the Bear Creek, Swansboro and Western Carteret fire departments assisted Hubert firefighters along with Carteret and Onslow County EMS, and Air Link.
