AZ City Reaches Settlement after Deadly Apparatus Crash

Feb. 17, 2022
The City of Phoenix has agreed to pay up to $3 million after a deadly crash involving a Phoenix fire truck.

After a deadly accident involving a Phoenix fire truck in 2019, the city has agreed to a multi-million-dollar settlement.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Phoenix City council voted unanimously to pay a family up to $3 million after they filed a wrongful death claim against the city, ABC 15 Arizona reported.

The accident happened in April of 2019 as the engine company was responding to an emergency call and a pickup turned in front of the engine.

The fire truck was operating its lights and siren at the time of the crash while driving 29 mph over the posted speed limit of 40 mph.

The excess speed was in violation of the department's policy to go no more than 10 mph over the posted speed limit, even with lights and sirens.

The accident killed, 20-year-old Kenneth Collins, his girlfriend, 19-year-old Dariana Serrano, and their infant son, Kenneth and injured three firefighters.
